Active Directory: problem with aliases from multiple domains in same org

I noticed, that group aliases won't show in Global Address Book and also won't resolve / work properly, even though all domains belong to the same organization in Grommunio Admin.

Example:
Organization: Foo
Domain: domainA.tld
Domain: domainB.tld

DomainA and DomainB belong both to Organization Foo.

Create GroupA: primary@domainA.tld; alias@domainB.tld
GroupA will only show as primary@domainA.tld; alias@domainB.tld however won't work, and won't show in GAB.

With Users it appears to work though.

Technically there is no workaround that a primary mail user or group can receive mails from domains within the same organization using an alias.

Good possible, that this is working as designed, but I consider this a bug. It's a core functionality in Exchange / Kopano and many other groupware solutions.

Essentially what you are asking for is alias-support for distribution groups. We do not have that feature (yet). So its not a bug, rather a "not-implemented-yet".

Set-DistributionGroup "Test-Group" -EmailAddresses @{add="alias@example.com"}

This is an important feature in mutli domain organizations -- it's normal to have sales@, support@ for each dedicated domain within the same group of companies.

Wait. If I understand you correctly, you are mixing up things here. You can still create shared mailboxes and also delegate permissions within an organisation as well as create aliases on mailboxes with other domains within an organisation. So what you are asking for does already exist. Just not for groups - which is mostly not used for such adresses anyways. distlist != shared mailbox.

As to your original question: No ETA, since not even created as feature request. If important to you, feel free to write one as a supported customer, pure community requests do not receive a comparable prio (obviously).

Sorry, but this is a core functionality of MS Exchange to have groups supporting aliases. Anyway, I am gonna drop you guys a mail as supported customer. Thanks again for your help. 🙂

Using AD is also core functionality even requirement, and guess what, we don't need it. Using Windows is also core functionality. 😉

In all seriousness: I can tell from in the meanwhile many large installations that group aliases are not used. I get your point, not doubting your need, just want to handle your request with a salt of expectation management. If everything is prio 1, nothing is.

We are currently evaluating Grommunio and doing some deeper tests -- those are basically the things we noticed so far. Enterprise size is > 1500 users, > 200 groups (with aliases!), > 200 shared inboxes, > 5 domains.

Microsoft's cloud strategy is basically forcing us to look for alternative products and Grommunio is certainly one of the top candidates. I'm an Open Source enthusiast and I am in charge of this project in my organization.

Anyway, I am gonna open a bottle of champagne once I can get rid of our MS Exchange installation. 🙂
