Outlook on Mac breaks with public folder subscription

I have my Grommunio account connected to the Mac version of Outlook (latest "legacy" version, 16.97.1) via EWS. Everything is fine until I add a subscription to a calendar I have in the public folder area. Once I do that all syncing (mail, calendar, seemingly everything) breaks with an error in the corner that says "sync pending for this folder". It'll stay like that for days. I've tried restarting Outlook, clearing the cache for folders within Outlook, removing/re-adding the account, nothing has helped. As soon as I remove the public folder subscription and restart Outlook everything is fine again. I had no problems with this using Outlook on Windows.

Any ideas?

AFAIK EWS impersonation is not implemented at Grommunio yet - so no shared mailbox or calendar possible till now
Outlook for Windows uses MAPI Protocoll there it works without problems

Might be worth pointing out that I have an Office 365 email account added to this same Outlook installation and it can subscribe to public folder calendars without issue. So it seems whatever is going on is specific to Grommunio.

Well I think this is different, this isn't a calendar shared from another user, it's a calendar in the public folders area. Mac Outlook can connect to the calendar and show events just fine, so it seems Grommunio supports at least that much. But for some reason in the process it also breaks mail syncing.
