Grommunio on Ubuntu 24.04 'gromox-istore' vs 'gromox-http' Services

Hello all.

This question is about Grommunio, manual install on Ubuntu 24.04. I’ve search the forum for the word ‘ubuntu’, and it’s ONE hit! Eeek!

I currently run Grommuion/OpenSUSE appliance (ISO), beside the know bug “Bad Gateway” in the monitoring admin WebUI, it’s working and is my ‘prod’ email server.

Not much in this forum regarding Ubuntu 24.04 and running Gromuunio.

To my issue...

I have installed Grommuno on Ubuntu 24.04, but there is an issue I can't solve.

These two services gromox-http & gromox-istore both use port 5000. So, on boot, gromox-istore starts 1st, then gromox-http always fails, with the predictable error, "port already in use"

I can stop one service to start the other with success always, just not both at the same time.
After a reboot, in the admin WebUI Dashboard, the gromox-http in the service state list shows “Fail”.

I then issue: systemctl stop gromox-istore && systemctl start gromox-http, gromox-http is now running.

In the Admin WebUI, all service states are green (active | enabled), no errors or fails. “gromox-istore” is NOT a service that is listed with all the other services there!

I’m not sure what is ‘broken’ when gromox-istore is not running. Everything (so far) seems to work as it should.
If anyone here has any ideas, I'd love to explore Ubuntu + Grommunio.

For example: is gromox-istore needed?

How to change port use? If I change the port, something else will break I'm sure, no? 😁

It's not documented but anyhow. Try this

echo istore_standalone=1 |tee -a /etc/gromox/gromox.cfg

EDIT: fyi, you can also just disable it via systemctl disable gromox-istore.

Changelog.rst:
istore: standalone exmdb_provider process launcher (splits the gromox-http process into two for better debuggability)

So following above dev-comment, there's no imminent motivation, yet to run gromox-istore (=exmdb_provider) beside you're working on the code or e.g. wan't to operate gromox-zcore independently of gromox-http.

You can utilize the exmdb_provider either:

as a standalone-process and let gromox-http connect to gromox-istore as a client on port 5000 (configurable).
gromox.cfg: istore_standalone=1
Or embedded within gromox-http (this was & is the default modus operandi)
gromox.cfg: istore_standalone=0

In the last case, you have to ensure, that gromox-istore is not running in parallel, as both services bind to port 5000.

I had read the man page of gromox-istore, but not being a coder, just a tinkerer 🙂 I was a little overwhelmed with the many options..

Adding the suggested istore_standalone=1 to gromox.cfg, the Grommunio services (all of them) started with out any issues at boot.

The default isistore_standalone=0 (=don't use gromox-istore) and disabling gromox-istore.
Using the standalone-mode requires the twostep-ruleprocessor.

And don't forget, you're running a bleeding edge master or prime dev-build which is likely unstable.

Ah, that twostep-ruleprocessor is not understood by me, so I will ensure I have this:

istore_standalone=0
systemctl disable gromox-istore

ich habe in der Doku gesehen das dort keine 0 oder 1 aufgeführt ist sondern ein yes or no, habe in der gromox.cfg ein istore_standalone=yes eingetragen und jetzt sind alle beiden Dienste parallel gestartet! OK auch mit 1 geht es jetzt, komisch...
