Network configuration is missing

Hello everyone.

I've installed Grommunio on a virtual machine within Proxmox, on a server rented from OVH.

I've added a second IP address that will be exclusively for Grommunio. Despite the problems adding this IP to Proxmox (I have to generate a virtual MAC address in the OVH Control Panel), it seems to be working.

I've configured the network in Grommunio using YaST and from the console. I haven't run the "Grommunio Setup Wizard" yet, but the network is working. I can send and receive pings, access via SSH, everything seems normal.

However, the "Grommunio Console User Interface" displays this error in red: "Network configuration is missing."

I don't know what else to do before continuing with the Grommunio setup.

P.S.: IPv6 is disabled in Proxmox, although it seems to be working in Grommunio.

You shouldn't assign a public IP directly to your virtual Grommunio server. Install a virtual firewall on your Promox (e. g. Sophos XG or pfSense or Proxmox Mail Gateway, all freely available) and assign a RFC1918 ip address to your Grommunio. Then configure the mail proxy and web application firewall of your gateway solution. 🙂

I understand what you're saying and it sounds good, but I'm a little confused. You're proposing to use Grommunio internally (as if it were just a simple email repository). Users of email and other Grommunio functions would connect to it only from the internal network (or via VPN), and Proxmox Mail Gateway would be exposed to the internet, handling the receiving, sending, and filtering functions.
I understand that email accounts configured on mobile devices (phones and laptops) should use a VPN constantly, but I'm not sure if that would cause problems.

Also, I'm not entirely clear on how to configure features like autodiscover, since I would need to expose at least port 443 of Grommunio to the internet.
Any thoughts?

When using Sophos FW for example, you could use its Mail Security to accept mails on TCP 25 and relay it internally to your Grommunio VM, as well as handling any outbound SMTP traffic.

Same goes for the Web Application Firewall in order to access Webmail and Active-Sync -- it will allow you to forward any TCP 80/443 traffic to your internal Grommunio VM (without any DNAT rules / port forwarding) and without being forced to use VPN.

Most important, you would not expose your mail server to the internet and there are no disadvantages when doing so; as it's actually best-practice to do it that way. From a security point of view, a mail server should never be reachable from the WAN, nor should it be able to access the internet itself (exceptions may apply to OS updates, signatures, mail server updates etc.).

Thank you very much for the information, but I would prefer not to use any Sophos products due to cost and because they are not an EU company.

Anyway, this is all unrelated to my initial question. Even so, I appreciate your interest and help.

This could be a DNS issue. Try setting your DNS to 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 if anything else is working.

The DNS servers are already set to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Hmmmm.

Another common mistake when configuring the Network using YaST: Enable IP forwarding in the last tab.
Double-check the resolv.conf and possible dns-nameserver parameters in the network configuration once again.

This is one of the the reasons why I prefer Debian.

I've decided to start from scratch, setting it up as you suggested, with a firewall, Proxmox Mail Gateway, and then Grommunio.

This will allow you to get a working Grommunio Installation on Debian -- even when using the supported repository. Install your Debian server from scratch, enable the Grommunio repository and install the grommunio-setup package and run it. No need for the Grommunio appliance on OpenSuse.

Thank you very much. I tried the installation on Debian 13, and it ends with errors. Several packages fail to install because they don't exist (libfmt9, libjsoncpp25, libldap-2.5-0, libtinyxml2-9, etc.), and although the installation seems correct, it doesn't work. The errors are visible in the grommunio-setup.log file.

I'm also quite worried that it might work and then crash during any update. I don't know...

I don't think that will work. The problem is that the packages it's not installing have been replaced by others in Debian 13 (libfmt9-libfmt10, libjsoncpp25-libjsoncpp26, etc.).
I installed Grommunio on Debian 12, and although it doesn't show any errors in grommunio-setup.log, three services are highlighted in red on the dashboard (gromox-http, gromox-imap, and gromox-pop3).

In all three, I see similar errors in MONITORING:
