Moving over from Kopano

Hi everyone,

This weekend I finally got some time away from family life and it was time to do some updating on my very outdated server. This included upgrading from Dedian Buster (well out of date) and move over all the way up to Debian 13. My setup was fully configured with Kopano and postfix supporting IMAP.

After the update this didn't work anymore (luckily this is a non critical email address) so I found out Kopano had stopped many years ago.

Now I would like to configure my server with Grommunio and move my Kopano database over so that nothing is lost.

I see install scripts, Manual installation instruction and kopano migration instruction.

As a bit of a linux novice I am a little lost where to start.

I use thunderbird mail on my laptop, I use full "exchange" functions on my phone and sometimes login via a webbrowser into the web environment.

Step one was adding the manual installation instructions and this already kicked an error, so I figured, lets pause here.

This is not possible. Kopano stores elements in a large MySQL database, whereas Grommunio uses a separate SQLite database for each mailbox.
Use this script for migration: https://github.com/grommunio/gromox/blob/supported/tools/kopano2grommunio.sh. It is essential that you read and follow the instructions in the script.

WalterH Hi Walter, first of all thank you for the quick reply. There really is only one user, me. I more meant I dont want to lose my old emails or contacts that are stored in Kopano.

The other options is I tinker and try to fix Kopano on my machine. Guessing that will involve older php versions etc.

Then I can configure a clean install of gromix and move everything the old fashioned way.

The script I mentioned, migrates all elements from Kopano to grommunio. The exceptions are rules and rights, but these are not important for a single mailbox system.

I would not recommend this: You're having dependencies on python 3.11 (can be achieved with venv) and PHP7.x
If you're able to build from source, PHP8.x is possible, but all in all - It's simply not worth the effort.

The migration-tools as recommended by @WalterH are very useful and I expect, you'll have a quick and simple migration, especially if there's just one mailbox.

Wenn der Datenbestand nicht allzu gross ist, würde ich neben ausführlichen Test mit dem genannten Script auch den Export über Outlook in eine PST in Betracht ziehen, die dann wieder importiert wird, wenn die neue Verbindung steht. Sofern der Datenbestand von Kopano schon "alt" ist, verbergen sich darin auch gerne mal Fehler, die ein Script idR. nicht ausgleichen kann. Meine Erfahrung dahingehend ist, dass bei Datensatzfehler solche Scripte auch mal ins "stolpern" geraten und danach Daten fehlen. Der Export und Import über Outlook ist in solchen Fällen wie hier eigentlich ganz elegant.

That's bullshit. The script uses tools programmed by grommunio to export the Kopano database and migrate the elements to grommunio. It couldn't be better.

What does experience tell us? When I set up Grommunio, I had a Kopano database that went back to Zarafa v5 or maybe 6 and outlasted Kopano v7. The script mentioned may have made some progress, but ultimately in my case I got the best results with Outlook. Of course, thats now a few years ago, so things are certainly different now, its not against the Script.
