If you're running the appliance as a VM, then you probably won't need to pay too much attention to the system setup. The only thing to consider would be how large your storage pool will become, once it's in full use, but even that can be adjusted after the fact.
However, I do agree, that the documentation is lacking here and there, but as this is a rather young project, that is to be expected. I'd be probably better, if you could ask specific questions, if you got stuck somewhere. 😉
