Das sollte in der /etc/postfix/main.cf für saslauth stehen.

Danke für die schnellen Antworten. Ich habe die Änderungen durchgeführt, das Ergebnis ist faktisch das gleiche:

Thunderbird Meldung 1:
Anmeldung auf dem Server name.fq.dn mit Benutzernamen "user@name.fq.dn" fehlgeschlagen

Thunderbird Meldung 2:

Senden der Nachricht fehlgeschlagen.
Der Postausgangs-Server (SMTP)  kann nicht authentifiziert werden. Bitte überprüfen Sie das Passwort und die gewählte „Authentifizierungsmethode“ unter „Konten-Einstellungen | Postausgangs-Server (SMTP)“.

Ändern des SMTP Server in Thunderbird von 25 auf 587 und StartTLS bewirkt nur, dass sich die Logzeile vorn ändert. Die Meldungen bleiben sonst gleich:

Das Problem waren div. kleinere Einstellungen in der main.cf und der nicht laufende Daemon saslauthd

Habe mich etwas zu früh gefreut. Die Mail kommt vom Hoster / Smarthost zurück, relay not permitted.

Ich setze mal die main.cf Parameter wieder um ....

So, Fazit: es lag wohl ausschließlich am fehlenden Daemon saslauthd

Die main.cf Parameter die WalterH vorgeschlagen hatte sind eben für einen Mailserver mit direktem Versand. Da dyn. IP aus einem besch. Netz dann halt per Smarthost und da brauche ich die Authentifizierung. Jetzt funktioniert alles (scheinbar / noch) wie gewünscht.

Keine Ahnung. Die Installation wurde am 18.01.25 mit dem akt. Skript durchgeführt. Ich kann das ja mal mit anderen Installationen vergleichen.

     saslauthd should be started from the system boot scripts when going to multi-user mode. When running against a protected authentication database (e.g.
     the shadow mechanism), it must be run as the superuser. Otherwise it is recommended to run daemon unprivileged as saslauth:saslauth, requiring the run‐
     time directory to have root:saslauthd owner. You can do so by following these steps in machines using systemd(1) :

     1.   create directory /etc/systemd/system/saslauthd.service.d/
     2.   create file /etc/systemd/system/saslauthd.service.d/user.conf with content

          [Service]
          User=saslauth
          Group=saslauth

     3.   Reload systemd service file: run “systemctl daemon-reload”

yeah, something with my test vm was borked but i rewrote the enable thingy anyhow.
on a freshly preseeded vm i ran grommunio-setup and rebooted and now it's running again aswell..
